Building Solutions for New Mexico's Housing Crisis
We know what works – we just need to do it. The Office of Housing is focused on deploying resources to proven strategies, promoting best practices, and working with all segments of the community who are engaged in housing and homelessness issues.
Housing Affordability & Availability
New Mexico’s housing affordability issues continue to grow. A decade and a half of underbuilding has led to an historic housing shortage that is pushing home prices out of reach for a majority of New Mexicans and driving the number of people experiencing homelessness to unprecedented levels. The issues are so broad and impact so many, that subsidy-based approaches alone cannot solve the problem. That’s why we are pursuing a new level of strategic response that leverages the full range of state resources to tackle the underlying systems that are making it take too long and cost too much to build badly needed entry level housing.
Investments in Housing
The state’s housing investments are designed to meet New Mexico’s diverse needs, from growing cities to rural communities. By supporting construction, preservation, and community-driven development, these efforts expand access to safe and affordable homes statewide.
Investments to Address Homelessness
The state supports a network of programs and facilities that help New Mexicans experiencing homelessness move toward stability. These investments expand shelter capacity, strengthen treatment and navigation services, and connect residents to the resources they need to transition into long-term housing.
Building Solutions for New Mexico’s Housing Crisis:
Our work is informed by outreach to over 40 towns, cities, counties, and tribal governments. From this, we’ve identified unmet needs in four key areas designed to address the underlying drivers of historically high construction costs and our slow pace of adding new housing.
